Needwood Middle School, in conjunction with the International Seafarers' Center and the Oak Grove Artists' Guild, conducted an art contest as part of their participation in the Port-as-Classroom project. Eighteen art students submitted work for judging. The winner's painting, "Happy New Year", was presented to the captain of the Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics car carrier M/V Faust. The painting traveled to Sweden and now hangs in the school of the captain's son. We hope to receive a piece of artwork from a Swedish student for display at Needwood Middle School.
The schools collected items that were included in the International Seafarers' Center Christmas at Sea project. Every seafarer on every ship that visits the Port of Brunswick between Thanksgiving and Epiphany are given a ditty-bag or wrapped shoe box filled with items such as combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, band aids, etc.
The schools also participated in collecting men's clothing to be donated to the International Seafarers' Center clothes closet. This clothing is available to Seafarers for free.
