Not only have we conducted classes but we have also visited ships, toured the port, learned the art of storytelling, been shown the use of a sextant, compass, and GPS for navigation, developed and practiced interviewing skills, and heard about life aboard a ship.
The 2010-2011 school year was kicked off by a tour of the Port of Brunswick, Colonel's Island facility for the students from Needwood and RECA. This tour was led by Georgia Ports Authority Manager Bill Dawson and culminated in a tour of the Car Carrier M/V Tianjin Highway and a pizza lunch at the International Seafarers' Center on Newcastle St. The students thoroughly enjoyed touring a ship that can carry over 6,000 cars and talking with the captain and crew about their encounter with pirates!
As a result of a newspaper article highlighting the port tour by the middle schools, the Christian Montessori School contacted the International Seafarers' Center and asked to be included in Port-as-Classroom. They joined the project with a tailor-made 6-week curriculum for grades 3-6.
"Pictorial Journal"… Digital cameras and flash drives have been sent aboard two ships so seafarers can provide a pictorial "journal" of their ship's travels and their work aboard ship. The pictures are shared with the students for a first-hand look into life as a seafarer.
A guest speaker from Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics in Savannah, Kathleen Jakubowski, came to speak to students about her experiences as Brunswick's the first female longshoreman, one of the first female graduates of the Kings Point Maritime Academy, her life aboard a ship, and her job coordinating the loading and unloading of car carriers of their 6,000 car and equipment cargo in multiple ports. What a huge job!
Volunteers with the International Seafarers' Center came into the classroom and shared with students their experiences while visiting ships, working and traveling with the maritime industry, and even living in other countries.
As part of the Port-as-Classroom community outreach program, information on the growth, success, and future of the project was presented to the Golden Isles Maritime Club's March luncheon meeting. The Maritime Club supports educational opportunities provided students of all levels in Glynn County and presented the Port-as-Classroom Project with a $500.00 grant.
