Legal Aid & Conflict Resolution
|
In any group of working people disagreements occur between individuals or with employers, authorities and others. Such discord is especially difficult for mariners who are often isolated and far from home. Disputes within a seafarer's family or with others in his or her country are particularly distressing and may impact morale and job performance. Just, amicable resolution of problems is always desirable and often vital to effective operation of a vessel. Often, the International Seafarers' Center can provide free professional and confidential aid to individual mariners or crews. Please note the following:

- ISC can refer mariners needing legal aid to members of the legal community of Glynn county who volunteer their services without cost.
- ISC is part of a national network of legal professionals whose free expert advice is available when required by unusual circumstances.
- Where conflict exists and there is time for arbitration, professionally qualified Conflict Resolution practitioners can be made available to advise and counsel antagonists and to seek amicable settlement.
- ISC can facilitate communication and interaction with national and international regulatory agencies or organizations representing seafarer interests (for example, the ITF, the IMO or the Center for Seafarers' Rights).
- Members of the ISC staff as well as chaplains may serve as useful facilitators in dispute resolution. ISC, through a Memorandum of Understanding, acts as an agent of the United States Coast Guard for matters jeopardizing the welfare or well-being of individual mariners or of crews. Problems are always treated with discretion and confidentiality. Discussions are held privately. Action is taken only with complainant agreement. Call ISC if unable to meet staff members during regular hours of operation.
